INSTRUCTOR DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME
JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION – Participant in Instructor Development Programme
REPORTING TO – Centre Manager, Tollymore Mountain Centre
HOURS OF WORK
Participants will attend Tollymore Mountain Centre five days per week, which will include weekends. Approximately 15 hours per week will be assigned to specific operational duties, the remainder of the time will be used to maximise training opportunities alongside full and part time instructional staff. A monthly work programme will be completed in advance, to allow for attendance on courses, gaining personal experience and co-ordinating Duty Instructor roles and Climbing Wall duties.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITES:
Participants in the Instructor Development Programme (IDP) will be responsible for
- Maintaining a detailed training log
- Attending formal training courses, as required
- Planning and gaining personal experience outside formal training.
- Fulfilling specific operational duties, outlined below
TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES
A full list of training opportunities is outlined in the scheme description.
Participants will be assigned a mentor / manager, who will help with training plans, offer advice and discuss training opportunities.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
Participants in the IDP will have a series of responsibilities associated with
- Being ‘Duty Instructor’,
- Working in the climbing wall on average one evening per week,
- Admin duties one afternoon per week
- Other areas associated with their development as instructors.
1. Roles and Responsibilities of the ‘Duty Instructor’ (DI)
· Pre course responsibilities:
o Ensure that all required rooms are ready, course participants are met on arrival and all relevant paperwork is completed,
o Check that lounges are clean and appropriately laid out for the needs of the course(s) (liaise with full time staff),
o Check all white boards are clean,
o Ensure that flip charts / OHPs / digital projectors are in place and working,
o On multi group days, clarify with staff which groups are using which rooms,
o Check that the heating is on that and fires are lit as necessary,
o Report any damage to the maintenance officer,
o Check all other areas, such as reception / kitchen / hallways etc are clean, reception desk is clear of rubbish and Tollymore Mountain Centre brochures are displayed on the desk,
o Check that tea / coffee / biscuits are available for course participants, and
o Print off the weather forecast as required.
· Responsibilities on arrival of group and during the course
o Ensure that course participants receive a warm welcome at reception upon arrival and are shown tea / coffee etc on signing in,
o Ensure all students sign in on the course register and the bedroom register (if required),
o Check the sign in sheet for any special dietary needs and inform the full time staff of any,
o Carry out the ‘Centre briefing’ to visiting groups, as required,
o Act in accordance with the Centres Accident and Emergency Procedure in the event of an accident,
o Ensure that course participants are aware of security procedures when they leave the centre at night,
o Ensure that the drying room is switched on,
o Lock up the centre at night, and
o Ensure that course participants strip beds of laundry at end of course
· Post Course Responsibilities
o Collate all course paperwork, attach it to the course clipboard and leave it on the Office Managers desk.
o Assist course staff to return equipment to the stores and drying areas
o Ensure that the centre is locked, alarm is set, as required
· Other responsibilities as a DI
o Take telephone calls as required
2. Climbing Wall / Office Duties. The DI will be responsible for office duties on average one afternoon per week and climbing wall duties on average one evening per week. These duties include:
· Assisting with general office duties and climbing wall duties one day per week,
· Taking and dealing with enquiries
· Inputting information into various databases
· Arriving on time (2.30 p.m.) at the Centre on days when working on the climbing wall,
· Ensuring that the wall is clean and tidy,
· Ensuring that sign in sheets are available,
· Ensuring that all wall users read instructions, rules and regulations, sign in and pay the appropriate amount,
· Hiring equipment and taking payment as appropriate,
· Serving refreshments and taking payment as appropriate,
· Cleaning the climbing wall including mopping floor, cleaning desk, cleaning changing and toilet areas, cleaning tables and chairs, washing dishes and cleaning kitchen area,
· Cashing up at the end of the evening, completing all paperwork and putting any money received in the safe, and
· Locking up on closing.
3. Assisting instructional staff planning and providing activity sessions:
· Assisting and support full and part time instructional staff as required,
· Assisting course instructors to issue equipment,
· Assisting course instructors to prepare course materials,
· Assisting course instructors to deliver courses, as appropriate,
· Delivering or supporting the evening programme, as required, and
· Checking groups return to the Centre, as appropriate, including use of ‘ETA’ Board and ‘ETA’ Procedure.
4. Maintenance of the stores in the Centre
· Signing in and out equipment as required,
· Assisting with stock takes, and
· Clearing drying room on Monday mornings.
5. Other Responsibilities
· To be available to assist on Centre related duties, outside normal working hours and / or remote from the Centre,
· To attend meetings, as required,
· To assist with the operation of the Centre’s systems and procedures,
· To assist and support other centre staff as required,
· Taking part in the Sports Councils Induction Process,
· To take an active role in the Council’s Investors in People initiative,
· To take an active role in the Council’s Annual and Mid-Year Performance Review and participate in Development Meetings with the Line Manager including the identification of learning and development needs to meet agreed, identified objectives, and
· Any other duties not inconsistent with the above that may be required by the Centre Manager from time to time.
