Students should be reasonably fit and prepared for 5 or 6 days on the hill including an overnight camp and a number of evening sessions.
This 6 day training course comprises both indoor lectures/discussions and a multi-day expedition, including some night navigation exercises. Topics covered on the ML training syllabus will include: party leadership and group management, navigation, walking skills and personal equipment, camp craft, security on steep ground, emergency rope work, mountain hazards and emergency procedures, weather, access and conservation.
Mountain Leader (ML) training is for those who wish to lead others in the mountains, hills, and moorlands of Ireland and the UK, in summer conditions. It is designed to promote the safe enjoyment of the mountains and provides instruction in the skills required for those who wish to lead groups.
Bring any of your own personal hillwalking outdoor clothing and kit. Such as, waterproof jacket and trousers, boots, fleece jacket, hat and gloves, flask, water bottle, mourne map (1:25,000), compass Silva type 4 or similar, camp kit: sleeping bag, stove, cookware, etc, and spare clothes (it’s best to bring plenty of lighter layers and avoid cotton if possible as it offers little heat and takes ages to dry out if wet or sweaty).
Please ensure you bring along a device which will allow you to ‘stopwatch’ your time.
Tollymore can supply most of the equipment you require for this course but as an aspirant ML it is assumed you will be fairly self-sufficient in terms of kit.
The Mountain Leader Award Training Week course fee includes kit, equipment, in course transport, coaching, food and accommodation.
Course accommodation will be in shared twin ensuite rooms. If you would prefer not to share a room, single occupancy may be available for an additional charge.

We know that you and many others like minded folk are very keen to get back on track with your plans to attend and complete a range of personal skills training and qualifications in a range of disciplines.
Believe us when we say we are equally keen to get outside with you and help you reach your goals and complete that journey.
How do we know? Because every day we get emails and phone calls asking when will courses resume and with every NI Executive mention of easing of restrictions the emails and phone calls are more frequent……
