No prerequisites other than a reasonable level of fitness and an interest in trying a new experience under safe expert guidance is required for this course.
This course would also be ideal for indoor climbing wall users who want to get outside on real rock.
Minimum age 13, however anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Exceptions will be considered on a case by case basis and will be reflective level of experience of the course participant and will require parental/guardian sign –off. This must be authorised by the Centre Manager. Please contact the Centre if you discuss.
This is a one day course providing an introduction to climbing outside on boulders and friendly crags. The focus will be on maximum climbing time, how to move on rock, finding balance and using feet. Basic ropework and belaying will also be included.
This First Step Rockclimbing Skills course is ideal for anyone, young or old, who has ever looked up at the rock faces and wondered what it would be like to actually climb on them and get their hands dirty on the finest Mourne Granite.
Only a basic level of fitness required, and don’t worry about a head for heights we’ll look after that bit.

Bring any of your own personal hillwalking outdoor clothing and kit such as, waterproof jacket and trousers, boots, fleece jacket, hat and gloves, flask, water bottle, and spare clothes. It’s best to bring plenty of lighter layers and avoid cotton if possible as it offers little heat and takes ages to dry out if wet or sweaty.
Tollymore can supply most of the equipment you require for this course but it is preferable to use your own were possible even if it’s just a chance for your instructor to comment on your kit and give advice.
Equipment, in-course transport, instruction and a packed lunch.
Accommodation:
Your course is a one day course, so accommodation is not provided. However, we do have changing rooms, showers and lockers available for your use.
We can offer you a nights’ accommodation and breakfast either at the beginning or end of a course for an extra £26.50 per person. This is a great way to further enhance your time at Tollymore and savour the beautiful majestic setting that the Centre has to offer.
Catering:
Our catering is first class, noted both for the quality and quantity of the food that we provide. Your course is catered, so you will be provided with a packed lunch for the day. You may however wish to bring your own personal snack food for use during the course. You can fill a flask with tea or coffee at the Centre if required.
