No previous experience is needed!
Tollymore National Outdoor Centre will be running an introductory series of 4 evenings, to enable people to learn the skills needed to come and use the wall under their own steam.
The course takes place on four consecutive evenings – 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th April, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. each evening.
Rockclimbing is really increasing in popularity and is now an Olympic Sport. However, you don’t need to aspire to be an Olympic Athlete to get the most out of climbing! Climbing is great fun – come with friends, have the craic and banter and get a good work out.
We have a number of different climbing walls at the centre, to cater for everyone from first time climbers to experienced competition athletes. Over the course of the 4 evenings, we will use different walls to learn different techniques.
The main wall has over 40 routes ranging from easier climbs, with big holds close together to more technical and strenuous routes that are steeper and have fewer, smaller holds. There is something to challenge everyone.
This series of evenings is for those who wish to learn how to use the climbing wall, under the supervision of experienced, qualified instructors.
Day 1 |
Successive weeks will build on the previous weeks skills and will cover areas such as movement on the wall, climbing effectively, ropework and ‘belaying’, bouldering and developing skills |
No specialist equipment is necessary – Tollymore will provide rock shoes, harness and any other technical equipment that is needed. All you need to bring are comfortable clothes, such as running leggings or tracksuit bottoms and a comfortable top. The climbing wall isn’t heated, but is not too cold, however bring an extra fleece just in case!
The course fee includes all equipment needed (harnesses, rock shoes and ropes) and instruction.

Current situation
As you are probably aware the current advice from the Northern Ireland Executive, Health Promotion Agency NI and Health & Safety Executive NI, as well as our expert group within Sport NI is that we cannot deliver any face to face courses for our customers including use of the Hot Rock Climbing Wall.
We know that you and many others like minded folk are very keen to get back on track with your plans to attend and complete a range of personal skills training and qualifications in a range of disciplines.
Believe us when we say we are equally keen to get outside with you and help you reach your goals and complete that journey.
How do we know? Because every day we get emails and phone calls asking when will courses resume and with every NI Executive mention of easing of restrictions the emails and phone calls are more frequent……
