We can deliver a one day Leave No Trace Awareness Course on request (this is the pre-requisite for the Trainer’s Course). This Awareness Course costs £45 and includes certification.
The Centre also runs Leave No Trace Trainer’s Course over a weekend. The Leave No Trace organisation uses trainer status as a prequisite for the delivery of Awareness Courses. On attending a weekend course you are then put on a central registry of Leave No Trace providers.
The Leave No Trace Trainer’s Course will focus on the delivery of the seven principles of Leave No Trace and techniques for teaching. Participants will be asked to come prepared to do a short outdoors teaching session on one of these principles incorporated into a skill or some other Leave No Trace specific topic. These topics will be sent to participants prior to attending the course.
As a group we will be advising and critiquing each other in an effort to learn more about how to effectively communicate the skills and ethics of Leave No Trace.
The emphasis is to make this as discussion based as possible with practical methods used in an outdoor classroom and will be done as part of a journey on foot looking at a range of environments that lend themselves to highlighting the seven principles.
The Leave No Trace Trainer’s Course is for any person involved in outdoor recreation whether on a personal or professional level who wants to incorporate an environmental ethos into what they do.
The Awareness Course is about finding out what Leave No Trace is and how it fits into what you do and the Trainer’s Course is for those who wish to incorporate environmental awareness training to other outdoor activity enthusiast.
The Trainer’s Course is very useful for those who find themselves in a leadership role, should it be the hills, on the rivers or sea.
For this Leave No Trace Trainer’s Course please bring along any props you may wish to incorporate into delivering a session. Please also bring any normal outdoor hill gear and any other specialist equipment can be supplied by us.
The Leave No Trace Trainer’s Course fee includes kit, equipment, in course transport, coaching and food and registration and Leave No Trace Manual (£35pp).
Our catering is first class, noted both for the quality and quantity of the food that we provide. Your course is catered, so you will be provided with a packed lunch for the day. You may also wish to bring your own personal snack food for use during the course. You can fill a flask with tea or coffee at the Centre if required.
Accommodation is not provided as you will be camping out. However, we do have changing rooms, showers and lockers available for your use.
We can offer you a nights’ accommodation and breakfast either at the beginning or end of a course for an extra £26.50 per person. This is a great way to further enhance your time at Tollymore and savour the beautiful majestic setting that the Centre has to offer.
Any environmental literature is helpful so the following are only a suggestion to get your grey matter working.

‘Animal Tracks and Signs’ – Preben Bang and Preben Dahlstrom
‘How to Shit in the Woods’ – Kathleen Meyer
Irish Trees ‘Myths, Legends and Folklore’ – Niall Mac Coitir
As you are probably aware the current advice from the Northern Ireland Executive, Health Promotion Agency NI and Health & Safety Executive NI, as well as our expert group within Sport NI is that we cannot deliver any face to face courses for our customers including use of the Hot Rock Climbing Wall.
We know that you and many others like minded folk are very keen to get back on track with your plans to attend and complete a range of personal skills training and qualifications in a range of disciplines.
Believe us when we say we are equally keen to get outside with you and help you reach your goals and complete that journey.
How do we know? Because every day we get emails and phone calls asking when will courses resume and with every NI Executive mention of easing of restrictions the emails and phone calls are more frequent……
